Poverty and Water

"There is a continent - AFRICA - being consumed by flames. I truly believe that when the history books are written, our age will be remembered for three things: the war on terror, the digital revolution, and what we did - or did not do - to put the fire out in Africa. History, like God, is watching what we do...." Bono (from his book On the Move.)

The fire in Africa is the insurmountable obstacle of poverty. Water affects poverty in that it is the foundation for everything. Most of the lack of clean, safe water is mostly felt by the urban poor and rural dwellers. For these people, medicine is not an option so they are vulnerable to chronic, water-born illnesses that drastically inhibit their productivity. Think of the last time you had the stomach flu or food poisoning. Imagine living like that everyday of your life! Children are too sick to go to school, adults are too sick to lead productive jobs and care for their families. In villages, the more able-bodied members are forced to seek out water sources miles and miles away, resulting in hours and hours each day transporting unclean water when they could be earning a living.
The lack of clean water sustains poverty. How can you give back to not only save lives but change lives? Clean water creates change. Children return to school, men and women return to work and fields are watered, providing food.
World Water Day is coming up on March 22, 2009. What will you do to change a life...to change history? For as little as $5.00, you can provide on person clean water drinking water for the rest of their life...you can help put out the fire in Africa....
